The past couple months have been all about bulbs for the farm! Our crew has had their heads down, hands dirty, and planting hats on. Due to the efficiency and hard work they put in, nearly one million bulbs are flawlessly hand tucked into our garden beds. To onlookers and visitors, the garden can seem bare this time of year, but below that nicely brushed soil lays newly crafted artistic designs that are just waiting to show themselves off come spring.
This time of year always brings us shorter days, grayer sky,
and wetter grounds. For many, the season can feel like it moves by incredibly
slow. But for us, we try to remember that these dreary colder days are all part
of the season that helps our flowers roots
begin. However, this past week has brought the "wetness" to another level. If
you have been following along with the events in the Pacific Northwest, you
know what we are referring to.
This year's rainfall has brought much more than
some drizzly days. Last week the Skagit River was predicted to reach record heights
and cause severe flooding throughout the Skagit Valley. The potential of making
disastrous situations for many, including our farm
and bulbs was high. Fortunately for us, our farm remained above water and was only
slightly affected by the rains, and though we remained lucky, surrounding areas
and farmers cannot say the same. Several homes, businesses, farmlands, and
animals were hit by massive flooding and will be recovering from the damages
for quite some time. We can only imagine the strain that this has caused,
especially coming after a year that already provided so many challenges. It
truly has us giving thanks every day for the ability to continue doing what we
love to do. As of now, our spring still looks like it will be bright for all to
see - and we do not take this opportunity for granted.
To all our surrounding farms, families, and communities who were impacted by the flooding, you are on our minds as you rebuild and recover. We wish you strength for the journey that lies ahead.
Be grateful for all you have because you never know what will happen next.
