Summer 2016
From the President
Greetings from a sunshine filled Skagit Valley!

Tulip Tidbits Feature imageIt’s summer season on the farm, which means we are at full speed processing daffodil and tulip bulbs. After harvesting (digging) our fields, bulbs were cleaned and dried and are now undergoing multiple checks for quality and size. Only the biggest and best will reach our customers with the rest set aside for planting back into our fields.

With nearly 1000 acres of bulbs, we always aim to get a head start on the fall season and start planting our fields by early September. This allows us to get all of the bulbs tucked into the earth in a timely manner. However, we recommend gardeners across the northern half of the country wait until at least the last week of September to plant your flowerbeds at home. We follow the same time line for planting at RoozenGaarde.

Bulb orders to our cool zone customers across the United States and Canada will start to ship from our farm the last week of September and be ready for planting upon arrival. Warm and hot zone customers will receive their bulbs at a later date after a period of pre-cooling.

May you all enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Getting Your Flower Beds Ready for Fall:
Looking to add compost or other organic matter to your garden? Do it now if your flower beds allow. Starting the practice in the summer permits these materials to break down and better blend into the soil in time for the fall. Not all flower beds will need or require additions, but if you plan to do so, starting early can help.
FREE Bulbs – Don’t Miss Your Chance

Free Bulbs! Our FREE bulb offer officially expires on August 31st! Customers placing qualifying orders of $75 or more should enter in the promotional code EX16 at checkout and 20 Ile de France tulip bulbs will be added to your order.

Bulbinars (Fall Planting Seminars)

Tulip Tidbits Feature imageEach year during bulb pick up and planting season, we conduct bulb planting seminars (Bulbinars) at our display garden. Material covered includes:

  • easy preparation and planting techniques
  • common mistakes that can result in less than spectacular blooms and easy fixes to these mistakes
  • garden design
  • history of Washington Bulb Co and RoozenGaarde
  • Q&A session

At the conclusion, attendees are welcome to roam the Display Garden and watch our crew in action planning and planting the flower beds – an undertaking that requires hundreds of thousands of bulbs!

Seminars are open to the public and free of charge!

Q&A

How do I plant bulbs in pots and containers?

Tulip Tidbits Feature imageJust follow these simple tips!

  • Bulbs need good drainage, so if you are using small pots make sure 1) there are several holes in the bottom of the pot, and 2) you include some type of coarse aggregate. Large containers naturally allow for better drainage.
  • Do not use old soil that you have already used for several seasons. Fresh soil, especially potting soil found at most any garden center, works best.
  • Be sure to give your bulbs plenty of water after planting them, and make sure they stay moist until they become dormant.
  • If you live in an area where it freezes occasionally, be sure to protect your bulbs with a mulch layer at least two inches thick. You can easily remove the mulch once the weather warms up.
  • If it gets extremely cold out, move your containers to a sheltered area for protection, since bulbs planted in containers will freeze much more easily than bulbs planted in the ground. And if you live in an area with a harsh winter climate, you may want to keep your pots in the garage throughout winter, or until the weather improves permanently.
