Another spring
has come and gone, and though we are officially into the summer season, it
feels like we only just escaped "April showers". The rainfall we are
experiencing in the Skagit Valley has caused us to be patient on numerous
occasions. June is typically when we begin harvesting our bulbs, but when in
June depends exactly on what Mother Nature throws at us. Wet earth makes
digging far more challenging. Luckily, as of recently, the fields are starting
to dry out a bit allowing our crews to start harvesting.
The good news, a little extra time in the soil gave our bulbs a
chance to get even bigger, and we can never be angry about large bulbs!
Like years past, we had great anticipation and high hopes
for our 2022 Tulip Season.
Our blooms
brought vibrancy of color no matter what the forecast held. It was a chillier
spring than most with plenty of gray skies and a lot of wind, but that did not
stop our weather ready visitors from coming by and experiencing the beauty that
makes our Skagit Valley during the spring.
The benefits of a cooler season meant our blooms could stay
with us for a little longer than usual. We had beautiful color in the garden
and held on to one of our fields through Mother's Day. As the climate continues
to change and weather grows more difficult to predict, there is one thing we
must always keep in mind - the spring blooms WILL come and when they do, it's
worth the wait.
The garden has been planted with our
summer beauties - lilies,
petunias, zinnia, and of course dahlias. All blooms are still premature in
their growth, but it won't be long before they are towering over each other
making the garden a fairytale adventure.
In the meantime, our gift shop is always full of fresh cut tulips and
for the time being peonies!
Due to high demand, our peony season goes by quickly. If you are local, keep
your eyes out for a special treat we'll have for you next weekend...did someone
say peonies and ice cream?
Wishing you all a wonderful beginning of summer.
